Hello world!

Gilded Dragonfly Books is born. After months of planning, we’re finally inviting manuscript submissions. Our website will be live in just a few days. (Until then, you can submit your query to novelkid@aol.com.) Oh…wait…you probably need to know a bit more about us, right?

Who are we? Gilded Dragonfly Books is a brand new fiction publisher. Sorry, no non-fiction at this point. Our editors are a diverse group of folks who are really looking for something a bit different. So, if your novel has been rejected because the hero or heroine is a bit “too out there” or your plot doesn’t “quite fit” our line, we’re the home for you. Our editors are all writers who understand the highs and lows of every writer’s career. We understand where you’re coming from–and where you hope to go because we plan to be right with you every step of the way. Our editors are Yasmin Bakhtiari, Sarah Hamer, Mary Marvella, Casi McLean, Melba Moon, John Robinson, Jackie Rod and Pamela Varnado.

What are we looking for? We’re quite diverse in our tastes. We’re interested in romance (any sub-genre, including mainstream, single title, category, historical, paranormal, suspense, inspirational), young adult (traditional, paranormal, romance, problem, urban fantasy, fantasy), horror, suspense, mystery (all sub-genres), fantasy (sword and sorcery, traditional, dark, urban). You’ll need to read what our individual editors are looking for before you decide who to send your query to. (Okay, for you grammar purists, to whom to send your query.)

Why? After spending some time as an agent, I realized that too many great books were being rejected because they simply don’t fit into an ever-decreasing size box. “Your novel is great, but it doesn’t fit our line.” “Your heroine is just too (insert description) for our readers.  We believe that great books deserve to be judged in the market, by the readers, not by the bean counters in the accounting department.

How? We’re starting small. We want to publish great books by great authors. Pure and simple. We don’t have pre-conceived notions about what constitutes a great book. We’re open-minded. We’re going to begin by primarily publishing e-books. We will, however, provide books for some author events. We’ll have copies for autographings and for you to give your mama. We know how important that book in hand is, particularly to newly published authors.

What else? We’re offering advice on smart, effective promotion for every author–not just the ones who don’t really need it. We’re totally author oriented and want to make publishing your novel the experience you’ve always dreamed it would be–not the nightmare that some writers encounter. We plan invest our best efforts and resources into every book we publish.

Join us in our new venture. We’d love to have you come along and grow with us. We feel this is the most exciting time for authors thus far in publishing. Our optimism is palpable and well-founded. We’re sincerely looking for you–and, of course, your great novel.

  3. I’m SO excited to be a part of this adventure! I know Gilded Dragonfly Books will be a place for authors to succeed!

  4. Let’s get this party started, Mary. I can’t wait to read all the great submissions we will receive.

  5. So happy to have Gilded Dragonfly Books! You sound like you are going to publish exactly as I write. That is, I write what the characters and the story demand, not what the ‘rules’ of the genres demand. As a result, I end up with books that are a little bit this and a little bit that.

    • Jackie Rod

I love the fact that Guilded Dragonfly Books will be publishing stories that may be a little out-of-the-box. Some authors write across a number of genres. We want to read those books.

      • Let’s see, I have a western/romance/mystery with a touch of humor completed that’s not enough of any one to suit the editors I have submitted to. And a sort of romance/mystery where the protag thinks she’s someone else (the people around her convince her she is.) Editors want a lot more romance in it, and since what’s there is supposedly with her ‘husband’, it’s not in the rules. And a series of shorts about a gay leprechaun who goes around straightening out people lives (I don’t know what genre that’s even close to), and a novel about a ranch that appears out of the mist, like Brigadoon, when needed and fades away when the job is done. Yes, I’d say I’m ‘out-of-the-box’. Maybe we can get together at some point.
